About This Service

Shop Drawing Services

Contractors and fabricators working on commercial, residential or industrial projects routinely need drawings that go beyond what the architect's or engineer's design documents provide. Shop drawings translate design intent into the level of detail that fabricators, installers and subcontractors can actually work from on site. Eminent BIM Services prepares shop drawings for structural steel, architectural components, MEP systems, HVAC ductwork, pipework and more — working from coordinated BIM models or from 2D CAD and PDF inputs. Our team handles the drawing preparation, revision management and documentation so that the people doing the installation have clear, accurate information in front of them.

What Are Shop Drawings?

A shop drawing is a contractor- or fabricator-produced drawing that shows exactly how a specific component will be manufactured, assembled or installed. It is not a copy of the design drawing. It shows dimensions, connection details, material specifications, anchoring methods, clearances and any fabricator-specific information that the design set doesn't include.

Take structural steel as a straightforward example. The structural engineer's drawings show the beam sizes, connection types and load information. The steel fabricator's shop drawings show the actual plate thicknesses, bolt patterns, weld symbols, hole locations and piece marks for every member going into that building. Without that level of detail, fabrication can't begin. The same applies to ductwork, curtain wall panels, precast elements, pipework and dozens of other building components.

Shop drawing review and approval is also a formal part of most construction contracts. The contractor submits, the design team reviews, comments are incorporated, and approved drawings become part of the project record. Getting that process right with accurate, well-organised drawings that address the reviewer's likely questions saves significant time in the submittal cycle.

Our Shop Drawing Services Scope

Structural Shop Drawings

We prepare shop drawings for structural steel members including columns, beams, braces, connections and base plates. This covers anchor bolt plans, erection drawings, piece mark schedules and connection details. For concrete, we produce rebar bending schedules and reinforcement details where the fabricator or installer needs them.

Architectural Shop Drawings

Architectural components often need their own fabrication documentation. We produce shop drawings for curtain wall systems and glazing, doors and frames, stairs and railings, millwork and joinery, cladding panels and facade elements. These drawings show dimensions, material callouts, fixing details and interface conditions with the surrounding structure.

MEP and HVAC Shop Drawings

For mechanical, electrical and plumbing trades, we produce coordinated installation drawings showing duct layouts, pipe routing, cable tray positions, equipment support details and penetration sleeves. HVAC shop drawings include duct fabrication details, fitting schedules and hanger layouts. For pipework, we prepare spool drawings where the fabricator needs prefabricated pipe assemblies.

Fabrication and Installation Drawings

Beyond discipline-specific work, we handle fabrication drawings for custom metalwork, precast concrete elements, modular components and other contractor-fabricated items. Where the project requires installation drawings to guide on-site assembly, we prepare those alongside the fabrication set.

Shop Drawing Revision and As-Built Updates

Projects change. When design revisions, RFIs or site conditions require drawing updates, we manage the revision cycle incorporating changes, updating revision clouds and reissuing affected sheets. We also produce as-built shop drawings where the record of installed conditions is needed for handover.

What We Deliver

The typical output from our shop drawing services includes:

  • Shop drawings in PDF and AutoCAD DWG format
  • Revit-based shop drawings where the project model supports it
  • Spool drawings for ductwork and pipework fabrication
  • Hanger and support layout drawings
  • Connection and detail sheets
  • Bill of materials and cut lists
  • Revision-controlled drawing sets with transmittal logs
Files are handed over in the format the contractor or fabricator requires. If the project uses a specific title block template or drawing numbering convention, we work to that standard.

Our Workflow

  1. Receive project information: We review the design drawings, specifications, BIM model (if available), and any submittal requirements from the contractor or design team.
  2. Clarify scope and standards: We confirm which trades and components are in scope, the drawing format required, the applicable fabrication or installation standards, and the submittal schedule.
  3. Model or reference existing geometry: Where a coordinated BIM model exists, we extract geometry and views directly. Where only CAD or PDF drawings are available, we set up the drawing framework from those references.
  4. Prepare shop drawings: Our team drafts the drawings to the required LOD, adding connection details, dimensions, material notes and any fabricator-specific information.
  5. Internal quality check: We review drawings for dimensional accuracy, completeness, correct referencing between sheets, and compliance with the project's drawing standards before release.
  6. Issue for review: Drawings are issued to the contractor or design team for approval. We track the submittal status.
  7. Incorporate review comments: Any reviewer comments are addressed and drawings are reissued with updated revision marks.
  8. Final delivery: Approved drawings are packaged and delivered in the agreed formats, with a transmittal record.

Level of Development (LOD)

Shop drawings by definition sit at the fabrication and installation end of the LOD scale. Most of the work we produce falls at LOD 350 to LOD 400.

At LOD 300, a model or drawing shows accurate geometry and position enough for coordination and documentation. For many architectural components and early-stage coordination drawings, LOD 300 is sufficient.

LOD 350 adds the interfaces: how one system connects to another, where support attachments sit, what clearances are maintained. For MEP coordination drawings and structural connection details, LOD 350 is where the practical installation information starts to appear.

LOD 400 is fabrication level full assembly detail, piece marks, material specifications, bolt patterns, weld symbols, cut lengths. This is what a fabricator needs to take a drawing to the shop floor. Most structural steel and ductwork fabrication shop drawings operate at this level.

The appropriate LOD depends on the trade, the fabricator's requirements and what the design team expects to see in the submittal. We discuss this at the start of a project rather than applying a default.

Software We Use

  • Autodesk Revit - for BIM-based shop drawing production, view extraction and schedules where the project model supports it
  • AutoCAD - for 2D CAD drafting, detail sheets and drawing output
  • Navisworks - for checking drawing geometry against a federated model where coordination is part of the scope
  • Autodesk Construction Cloud - for file sharing, model access and drawing transmittals on projects using that platform

Why Clients Use This Service

The value of well-prepared shop drawings is mostly in what they prevent. A fabricator who misreads a connection detail or doesn't have the correct dimensions makes parts that don't fit. An installer without clear hanger layouts wastes time on site working it out. A submittal that comes back with multiple reviewer comments and takes three cycles to get approved delays procurement.

Our shop drawing preparation services give contractors a more predictable submittal process. Drawings are checked before they go out, comments are addressed promptly, and the fabricator or installer receives a clear document that reduces the chance of a mistake in the field. For contractors managing multiple trades and tight procurement schedules, that matters.

Working with an outsourced BIM shop drawing team also gives contractors access to drawing capacity they don't have to maintain permanently in-house. When a project ramps up and the structural steel or HVAC submittal needs to go out in three weeks, we can scale to the workload.

Projects We Support

Our shop drawing services cover a wide range of building types:
  • Commercial and office buildings regularly require detailed curtain wall, steel and MEP shop drawings as part of the design team's submittal review process.
  • Hospitals and healthcare facilities often have complex MEP systems pipework, ductwork, medical gas lines where coordinated installation drawings are essential to keep trades from conflicting with each other.
  • Hotels and hospitality projects frequently involve feature staircases, custom joinery and facade elements that need fabrication-level documentation.
  • Industrial facilities and data centres have demanding structural and MEP requirements, particularly around equipment support, cable management and ductwork routing.
  • Residential and mixed-use developments at scale often benefit from prefabricated components bathroom pods, steel stairs, modular facades that need proper shop drawing packages.

Why Work With Eminent BIM Services?

Our team has worked across architectural, structural and MEP disciplines, which matters when preparing shop drawings that have to account for how different systems interact. We understand what a structural connection detail needs to show, what a ductwork fabricator is looking for in a spool drawing, and how to organise a submittal package that a design team can review efficiently.

We work to the contractor's or fabricator's standards rather than imposing our own. If the project has a specific title block, numbering convention, dimension format or drawing checklist, we work to it from the start. For international projects, we are familiar with documentation practices in the UK, US, Middle East and Australia, and we can adapt to project-specific BIM Execution Plans and LOD specifications.

Our team is set up for outsourced shop drawing production so contractors and BIM firms who need drawing capacity without adding permanent headcount can work with us on a project basis. Turnaround times are agreed at the start of each engagement based on the submittal schedule.

FAQ
Shop Drawings help reduce construction errors, improve coordination, ensure fabrication accuracy, and provide clear installation guidance for contractors and project teams.
At a minimum, we need the relevant design drawings structural, architectural or MEP as applicable along with any project specifications that describe submittal requirements. A coordinated BIM model speeds up the process significantly, but we can work from CAD drawings or PDFs where a model isn't available.
Yes. A significant portion of our shop drawing work starts from 2D CAD files or scanned PDF drawings. We set up the geometry from the design references and produce drawings in AutoCAD or Revit depending on what the project requires.
Most fabrication and installation drawings are produced at LOD 350 to LOD 400. The level we work to depends on the trade and what the fabricator or installer needs. We discuss this at scope stage so there are no surprises in the submittal.
Yes. We prepare the initial issue, track reviewer comments and reissue revised drawings. We also maintain a revision log so that the contractor and design team have a clear record of drawing status throughout the project.
Where the project has a federated BIM model, we can check shop drawing geometry against other discipline models before issue to reduce the chance of conflicts coming back in reviewer comments. If formal clash detection is needed as a separate service, that can be scoped separately.
Both. Where the project is being delivered in Revit and the design model is available, we produce shop drawings directly from the model. For projects without a BIM model, we work in AutoCAD. Some fabricators prefer DWG output regardless of how the drawing was produced, and we deliver in whichever format they require.
Yes. We work to the contractor's or client's title block, drawing numbering convention and dimension standard. If there is a BIM Execution Plan or project-specific drawing checklist, we review it at the start of the project and work to it.
We agree the submittal schedule at the start of the engagement and allocate resource accordingly. For larger scopes, we staff the project to meet milestone dates rather than treating it as a general queue.
